Multibed clinics are becoming more popular in the UK
They can increase affordability, and have other benefits too
In multibed clinics, such as Community Spirit, several people are treated together in a large room. The beds are separated by screens to ensure privacy. During most acupuncture sessions, the patient will relax on the bed for 20-30 minutes to allow the treatment to work. This allows the practitioner to begin treating another patient before the treatment ends.
The main advantage of the multibed setting is that, by utilising a large room with lower overheads, acupuncture can be provided at a fraction of the cost of a private, one-to-one session.
They have other advantages, however. Patient surveys have shown that many people who use multibed clinics enjoy the sense of space and sharing that these clinics can provide. They can also promote a sense of community and empower patients to think positively about their abilities to improve their conditions.
The Community Spirit clinic is a member of the Association of Community and Multibed Acupuncture Clinics (ACMAC), which aims to represent, promote and support multibed acupuncture projects in the U.K.
